Many gardeners who live in hot/humid tropical climates have requested
that we feature an heirloom tomato seed collection for those whose
garden is restricted to containers and patio gardening. One such
gardener is a friend who lives in a retirement community and who let me
know she no longer has a shovel or land to dig in but intends to feed
herself and her friends from the planted pots on her patio.
Well, here it is. We have assembled a collection of short, determinate,
tomato varieties that are well adapted to growing in hot & humid
growing conditions. This tomato collection features favorite heirloom
tomato varieties of different fruit sizes, and a diversity of beautiful
colors and delicious fruit flavors. (20-25 seeds/pack)
- Bush Beefsteak - A wonderful, compact and prolific, short bushy plant that grows to 3 feet, yields huge amounts of very early producing 8 oz. beefsteak tomatoes in clusters. A very popular variety that performs well in most climates. Determinate. 62 days.
- Gold Nugget Cherry - Prolific amounts of beautiful golden, 1-inch, oval, cherry tomatoes that are deliciously SWEET with a tart finish. A wonderful cherry tomato for snacking or salads. Determinate. 54 days.
- Kewalo - Uniform ripening, 6-8 oz., red, round fruit with excellent sweet, complex, well-balanced flavors. A good choice for hot & humid climates. Bred at University of Hawaii. Disease resistant. 75 days.
- New Big Dwarf - New Big Dwarf tomato offers lots of large 1-lb. deep-pink luscious tomatoes on 3' bushy plants. Perfect for patio gardening in pots. Wonderful rich, tomato flavors. Determinate. 90 days.
- Principe Borghese - Italian heirloom tomato. Big clusters of 1-2 oz. red, plum shaped, crack-resistant paste tomatoes that are a great substitute for Roma tomatoes. A great sauce tomato or eating fresh in salads or canning. These tomatoes are also prized for drying because they retain more flavor than most other drying varieties. Italians are known for hanging the whole plant, loaded with fruit, up to dry. Determinate. 78 days.
- Taxi - The best tomato variety for an early, lemon-yellow tomato. Very popular. Compact, bushy, determinate, tomato plants produce 4-6 ounce, meaty, uniformly-round, delicious, bright-yellow tomatoes that are very sweet (almost seem acid-free). A wonderful choice to add a zesty spark to tomato salads or a splash of bright yellow color to your favorite salsas. Tomatoes are good for slicing, therefore, they are perfect for sandwiches. Fruit holds up well in hot, humid growing regions. Determinate. 68 days.
- Homestead 24 - Great for hotter growing regions in the South since this variety sets fruit under even in hot weather. Big, leafy vines produce huge amounts of smooth, red, round 8 oz. fruits with exceptionally good taste. Resistance to cracking. Determinate. 80 days.
